E-cigs, vapes and other alternatives are quickly becoming as common in our daily society as your usual run-of-the-mill traditional alternative to the point where they may even be considered as fashionable. While this is, of course, a matter of preference and definitely up for debate, there’s no denying that the electronic cigarette has taken the world by storm over the past few years, with stores and even ‘vaping cafes’ opening up across the globe. So, how did these smoking alternatives become such a popular choice to the point of being fashionable? We’re exploring exactly that, below.
They’re Healthier Than Cigarettes
The original use for E-Cigs and Vapes was to provide users with a healthier alternative to traditional cigarettes. When vaping using an electronic device, you’re cutting out the need to actually combust anything – or, in other words, light up. Given that vapes don’t need to burn to provide users with the ‘hit’ that smokers are seeking, there’s no need for a number of harmful chemicals including tar, carbon monoxide, arsenic, ammonia and even formaldehyde. Vaping takes away these harmful chemicals for the most part, though there’s limited research into whether this truly has health benefits in a long-term situation.
Smoking is expensive. A pack of 20, for example, can cost anything from £7-£12 in some cases and given that smokers can often be seen working through a single pack in a day, the price undoubtedly adds up. For vapers, the initial costs can seem high, but once you have the kit in your hands, the only cost you’ll be paying out is that of the liquid you’ve chosen and potential replacement coils later down the line. Vaping is significantly cheaper than smoking, even for the heaviest of smokers, and with nicotine levels that can range from 0mg upwards, catering to taste and necessity is surprisingly easy.
As mentioned before, nicotine is still present in vapes in most cases and while there is the option of 0mg of nicotine in your liquids, more and more teenagers are picking up vapes and other electronic cigarettes and are falling prey to the addictive nature of the substance. While this isn’t necessarily a reason for it being fashionable, it certainly explains why so many people that have tried vaping in the past may be addicted to the process now, thus increasing the publicity of the action and making it seem – you guessed it – fashionable.
As we’ve mentioned before, the accessibility of vapes can also make it far more popular than smoking your average cigarette. There are countless stores and ‘cafes’ popping up across the globe, opening their doors to experienced vapers and newbies alike. Without the need to pop into a local corner shop or supermarket to purchase a packet of cigarettes, those who are a little more hesitant may find that stopping by a safe space like a vape store is a much easier and far less judgemental experience. The assistance on hand in these stores and, of course, the price also add to the accessibility of this particular trend, so it’s simple to see why so many people are adopting vaping as a more fashionable alternative to smoking.
Finally, we come to social acceptance. Perhaps the biggest player in the entire ‘fashionable’ argument, the fact that vapes are arguably more socially acceptable is something that shouldn’t be overlooked. While some public spaces have banned vaping, there are plenty of others that still allow it due to the less-harmful nature of the vapour emitted from the devices. Of course, there’s also the fact that it’s being seen increasingly as something that young people are turning to, giving those in the same age range yet another reason to try their hand at vaping.
While vaping as a fashion statement is something still clearly up for debate, there’s simply no way to deny that it’s become quite the popular option regardless. With young people and experienced smokers alike all delving into the world of liquids and tanks, the potential for this to become a much more widely accepted alternative to smoking is certainly high.
