1950’s Fashion Tips

red dress

likes to repeat. In a fall / winter we observe a big comeback of utterly feminine 1950’s. What does it mean? Imagine an hourglass silhouette, cleavage, pencil skirt and long gloves put together on a best background – a curvaceous woman’s body. Pretty impressive, isn’t it?

In a fall / winter we observe a big comeback of vintage, especially the utterly feminine 1950′s and 1960′s mod fashion. Those who are into 50’s will choose full skirts, swing jackets, cinched waist and gloves to make their looks reminiscent of film stars and icons Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn.

50’s style tips

  • remember to highlight your waist with a small belt, this is the best accessory to recreate an hourglass silhouette
  • buy a high-waisted mid-length skirt (as seen on: Alexa Chung, Carey Mulligan), below-the-knee pencil skirt (Carine Roitfeld, Kate Moss) or a circle skirt, they’re all very retro
  • don’t be afraid to create an eclectic look with mixed patterns that pop – mix florals, checks and vintage colours
  • make sure you have matching accessories: long leather gloves, a satchel, ribbon head band, fedora, horn-rimmed glasses, a silk scarf
  • fur is another key element of 1950’s, especially as a cute addition to the coat
  • as of hair, try one of these styles: a pulled back ponytail with bangs, a bouffant top knot, or just anything with waves and structure
  • 50s’ makeup means glamour red lips and a liquid eyeliner

Back in the 1950′s, women’s was very feminine and lady-like. Dresses were the most common article of clothing worn by women at that time. Even in the afternoons, women wore “day dresses,” which were usually wrap dresses or just plain simple dresses. Floral prints, collars, frills, and swing skirts were all big trends. Looking into the Spring of 2010, I noticed this retro, classy trend coming back in a more vibrant, modernized way. Not only for dresses, but in rompers as well. Colorful, floral prints are everywhere. Dresses with swing skirts are back too. So are high waists that are belted. I bought myself a springy, floral print romper and floral swing dress, and a white hat, all from Target, to complete the whole retro, lady-like look! Here’s some examples that may inspire you to go out and trade your little black club dress for one of these. 😉
